The history of the workshops is as follows: 1. Chiral00: Possible Existence of the Sigma Meson and its Implications to Hadron Physics YITP (Kyoto University), June 12-14, 2000 2. Chiral01: Chiral Fluctuations on Hadronic Matter Orsay, September 24-26, 2001 3. Chiral02: Chiral Restoration in Nuclear Medium YITP (Kyoto University), October 7-9, 2002 4. Chiral05: Chiral Restoration in Nuclear Medium RIKEN, February 15-17, 2005 Descriptions: It is remarkable to see recent developments in the attempts to understand hadron and nuclear physics in a unified framework based on the fundametal theory of the strong interaction, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Among various aspects of non-perturbative dynamics, chiral symmetry is perhaps playing the most important key role. Historically, the pion was proposed as the mediator of the strong interaction by Hideki Yukawa. Later on the pion has been established as a more profound object, namely the Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with the spontaneous symmetry breaking of chiral symmetry. Consequently, low energy hadron interactions have been proven to be described nicely by the low energy methods of chiral symmetry. Based on the knowledge of interactions in the free space, recent interests are extended to the phenomena under extreme conditions toward the restoration of chiral symmetry. This explores not only the fundamental dynamics of QCD based on quarks and gluons but also deeper understanding of hadron properties in hot and dense matter environment. Such progresses have become possible by exchanging ideas among particle, hadron and nuclear physics, and also by frequent communications between theorists and experimentalists. Topics: In this workshop, we would like to discuss the issues related to the above scopes of hadron and nuclear physics.
