For instance, advanced LIGO, which has recently detected gravitational waves from a black hole merger, will detect gravitational waves from binary neutron star mergers, and play a key role in understanding the equation of state (EoS) of dense nuclear matter and nucleosynthesis as well as supernova explosions. Furthermore, recent observations of massive neutron stars have stimulated debates on the property of the dense nuclear matter, such as possible existence of hyperons and quark matter. Future high-precision measurements of the mass and radius of neutron stars will shed light on the resolution. The aim of this long-term workshop is to gather leading and active researchers both from nuclear physics and astrophysics and to discuss the current problems and future directions in the physics of compact stars. We would also like to promote collaborations among researchers in the different fields. Subjects to be discussed are 1. Core collapse supernova explosions 2. Binary compact star mergers and their observations with electromagnetic and gravitational waves 3. Explosive nucleosynthesis in supernovae and compact star mergers 4. Observations and structure of neutron stars 5. Compact star matter equation of state 6. Ab initio calculation of nuclei and nuclear matter 7. Neutron rich nuclei and symmetry energy 8. Exotic components in neutron stars and dense matter EOS 9. Dense quark matter and QCD phase diagram 10. Related topics * Schedule The workshop will last 5 weeks in total, including a one-week conference. More than 100 people are expected to participate in the conference (capacity of the conference hall at YITP is 120 people maximally). The remaining 4 weeks are spent for workshops where participants can hear seminars and enjoy free discussions. The capacity of the visitor facilities at YITP during the 4-week workshop is 50 maximally. The main scopes of the workshops are nuclear matter EOS and neutron stars (Oct. 17-28) and binary neutron star mergers and supernova explosions (Nov. 7-18). Participants can choose their favorite dates to stay in Kyoto during the workshop. * Invited speakers of the conference (3rd week) Gordon Baym (Illinois), Alessandra Buonanno (Albert Einstein Institute)*, Nicolas Chamel (Bruxells), Paulo Freire (Bonn), Stefano Gandolfi (Los Alamos), J. E. Grindlay (Harvard)*, Charles J. Horowitz (Indiana), Dan Kasen (Berkley)*, James M.
